This autobiographical book (which takes the form of an interview) of Behemoth's lead singer, Adam Nergal Darski, was as interesting as I'd hoped, perhaps more. Coincidentally, as with several books I've read recently, it doesn't follow a strict chronology, instead moving deftly from topic to topic in an almost stream-of-consciousness way. I didn't really have any preconceptions about Nergal, but he came off very intelligent and pragmatic, qualities I admire a lot in others. You could almost say that he is a man after my own heart (or vice versa?). After many years of struggling to find a place for religion and faith in my life, I feel like I've found a kindred spirit in Nergal. As for the book itself, it was translated from Polish to English. I thought the English was overall very well done, with only a few grammatical oddities/errors. Highly recommended for Behemoth fans in particular, but also anyone who enjoys celebrity autobiographies.
I loved reading this book from front to back. From hearing a second-hand account of Nergal's audacious side to later reading about how his complex personality shifts a full 180° turn because of his adoration for one of his girlfriends, the whole book is a great mix of informative and entertaining tidbits about Nergal himself. 5/5 stars; would recommend this to anyone interested in reading this
Not so much an autobiography as a look into the man's mind. I always enjoy Nergal's philosophical and anti-religious insight. You learn a lot more about the public Nergal too, star in Poland, than we normally do here in the States. Of course there's the epic bout with cancer as well, highlighting his courage through deepest adversity. Nothing shakes Nergal's worldview (although some of his views on women still could use a little refining).
If you are a fan of metal, this book is definitely worth the read. Nergal covers everything from the early years to his time with supermodels and everything else in between. This is the music book of the year in my opinion. Itis well written and easy tro follow. Insoght from other metal musicians gives this book an overall inside look at not only Nergal, but Behemoth themselves and the whole extreme metal scene of the past 25 years or so. Also a lot of really great pictures!
Nergal has always been somebody who's intrigued me. First the interest came out of a place of fear, but as I started exploring Behemoths music I wanted to know more about him. After reading this book, I can say he is by far one of the biggest role models in my life. I have found a massive amount of respect for him not only as a musician, but as a person. I have a Behemoth tattoo on my left arm, after reading this I wear it with even more pride! Thank you for sharing your story.
I think Nergal is talented and smart but the layout was interview style, not the standard biography style. The interviewer at times comes across as annoying, not satisfied with the answers.
This was a good memoir though I felt it ended rather abruptly. I enjoyed the glimpse into the life of an artist I have been following for many years and reading about some of his personal challenges, tour stories and whatnot.
I'm a big Nergal fan but the book hasn't been my favorite. It might be the fact that is an interview and also the translation might be a factor. It has some interesting information on Nergal's points of view but it gets to a point where it gets kind of boring.
